Weddings

So some of my recent Kerala trips seem to be wedding inspired. I’d gone there earlier, and the last trip was along similar lines. The groom very helpfully decided to get married in Alappuzha (or Allepey for the tongue-rolling-challenged). On account of him being from there. Which meant that a whole bunch of us reached there a day early and piled on to a house-boat. We were not rude. We did call to say hi to him when we reached. We know our manners. The agenda was fairly straight-forward. Get off train, get on boat, get into കള്ള്. Or toddy for you. Squeeze in the wedding. But you get the drift. Now on with the photos.  Oh, yeah, the wedding went well too.

The requisite Kerala photo elements – Coconut palms, waterways and green fields.

Alappuzha isn’t different from the rest of the country. People still go to work. And they also have to wait for transport. Just on a different mode of transport.

So that’s your regular salary man commuter waiting for his ride. Common enough sight across the country right?

And you can still catch a rick if you’re in a hurry. Only you wouldn’t. You would catch a boat. Hopefully, you don’t have to go through the whole bargaining ritual. Might give a new twist to the term “sinking your money”.

So it is the same like everywhere. Except for the Communist flag.

The neighbourhood kirana store is what actually provides daily essentials everywhere in our vast land and there are enough and more in Alappuzha too.

An like everywhere, there is always the corner store for essentials.
An like everywhere, there is always the corner store for essentials. Like a cellphone connection.

The houses might boast of a slightly better view. Though crossing the street to go talk to your neighbour of last night’s match might take a bit of an effort.

A grand well-kept house in a prime location.

So all in all, Alappuzha is the same as everywhere. But it wouldn’t hurt to go spend a week there gwaking at the similarities. After all, in the familiar, we find comfort. If nothing, the fact that you can gorge yourself on superlative pearl spot, prawns & beef while quaffing copious amount of toddy should help you get comfortable. You don’t have to wait for an invitation to someone’s wedding to do that.
